There is an epidemic of school suspensions in the U.S. and the downstream consequences are severe. Adults suspend students, and while that may sound obvious, Rosemarie Allen realized that the problem might be the solution. When dealing with the difficult behaviors of children, what if we turned our focus inward?

Dr. Rosemarie Allen works passionately to ensure that children have access to high-quality early childhood programs that are developmentally and culturally appropriate. She teaches classes at Metro State University focused on raising teachers’ awareness of the impact equity, privilege, and power can have in the classroom. Dr. Allen serves as an intern on the Early Childhood Task Force with President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative and is a respected keynote speaker on culturally responsive practices and cultural competence.

Hi, fellow counselors! I wanted to share a fun little video I made over the long weekend. I am a first-year counselor in Ripon, WI. I made this to share with my elementary school students this week as part of my introduction! I hope it is a fun way for them to engage with me and get a better picture of what I do!

For those who have asked - the entire thing was created with an iPad. I bought the karaoke version of the song from iTunes, and used a website called Transposr to get it into the right key for my voice. I then recorded the track with Garage Band (an app all iPads have). I filmed the entire thing with an iPad camera, and then edited it using iMovie (another standard iPad app). The entire thing, start to finish, took 3 hours. The apps on the iPad are SUPER user friendly! My advice is to have a game plan going into filming so you can film in order - it will save a TON of editing time!

Today's children come from families living in one home or two, some are being raised by one mom or one dad, or they might have two parents/caregivers or live with grandparents or other family members. Others have parents/caregivers of different ethnic backgrounds, or who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. And some children are adopted or live in blended families. This short film is a collaboration between Our Family Coalition and Not In Our Town to encourage conversation about the many diverse family constellations, to give children the opportunity to see and appreciate their own families, and to be open and respectful to those who are different from them.
