In the early hours of Saturday, March 7th, 2009, Matthew Maher made the fatal decision to drive his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Traveling at a high rate of speed on the Atlantic City Expressway, Matthew struck the vehicle of 55 year-old Hort Kap, husband and father of six children. Mr. Kap was pronounced dead at the scene and Matthew was arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter. Matthew's poor decision to drink and drive would tragically change many lives. He was eventually sentenced to 5 years 5 months in prison, in which he must serve 85 percent of his time. Prior to Matt's sentencing on January 7th, 2010, a presentation was created by the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance featuring the story of Matt's life called,"I'm That Guy"

Every three days, more Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest than the number who died in the 9-11 attacks. You can lessen this recurring loss by learning Continuous Chest Compression CPR, a hands-only CPR method that doubles a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. It’s easy and does not require mouth-to-mouth contact, making it more likely bystanders will try to help, and it was developed at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. "This video is worth sharing," said Gordon A. Ewy, MD , director of the UA Sarver Heart Center and one of the research pioneers who developed this method.
Solution Focused Parent-Teacher Conferences

Traditional conferences focus on the student's deficits, issues, and problems. By focusing on these, we tend to amplify them and make them worse. The assumption is that "you get more of what you focus on." Instead, we need to focus on what the child, parents, and teachers will be doing more when the student is back on track.

Perhaps providing a glimpse into the near future of learning, the video (embedded below) from Thailand's Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) shows how augmented reality could help students open a whole new dimension from their textbooks. In this example, a student flips through a geology book meant to teach her about the layers of the earth.

Copy Machines, a Security Risk?

Could you buy thousands of confidential documents for a few hundred dollars? I’m talking about things like bank records, pay stubs, medical records and contracts. It's possible. And it's easier than you think. Just buy a used office copier. Most modern copiers retain an image of every document copied. Their hard drives are rarely wiped before disposal. These are the same copiers used by doctors, lawyers and police. This is a serious security risk.

Dr. Russell Sabella introduces his newest book, GuardingKids.com: A Practical Guide to Keeping Kids Out of High-Tech Trouble. From podcasts to porn, cyberbullying to cell phones, Dr. Russell Sabella helps readers understand the risks that emerge when high-tech tools, uninformed parents, and exuberant youth collide. Because kids are growing up with modern technologies, many are more expert than their parents. As a result, a parent's ability to make effective decisions for how technology is used may be compromised.

A March 2010 talk for educators given by ConnectSafely co-director Anne Collier (or rather her avatar, Anny Khandr) and edited by Knowclue Kidd (aka Marianne Malmstrom). Set in the underwater Paideia Coliseum in Second Life, Anny's talk was part of a series on digital citizenship and safety presented by Atlantis Seekers ( http://atlantisseekers.ning.com). Its aim is to help educators break through the myths and hype about how youth are using social media and consider what we're learning from the growing bodies of both social-media and youth-risk research. (Anne is also founder and editor of NetFamilyNews.org.)

A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite. This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant. Read as you listen…forward and backward. This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old. The contest was titled "u @ 50" by AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch it.

The device of the flexible display allows a new concept in notebook design growing out of the traditional bookformed laptop into unfurling and convolving portable computer. By virtue of the OLED-Display technology and a multi touch screen the utility of a laptop computer with its weight of a mini-notebook and screen size of 13 inch easily transforms into the graphics tablet, which with its 17-inch flat screen can be also used as a primary monitor. On top of everything else all computer utilities from power supply through the holding belt to an interactive pen are integrated in Rolltop. This is really an all-in-one gadget.
